DRAKWALD - RIVEN EARTH
Review by Sloof
It seems like an independent release, but for some reason Dooweet Records forwarded us this digipack release from Drakwald, a French band that likes to mix between Folk/Death/Pagan and started their career around 2009 in the area of Tours (Loire Valley). After a demo and a split (with Pictured, Hybrids and Skarn), the time was right to record a first full length album. This result was titled ‘Resist Fatality’ and was released in 2014, followed by numerous gigs with bands like Stille Volk, Eluveitie and an appearance at the Motocultor 2015 Festival, one of the most important Metal Festivals in France.
Now, it’s time to maintain their drive with their second album called “Riven Earth”, which is presented as a Digipack release, including booklet, photo and additional information. A very nice product, with a lot of attention to details, only the logo of the band is quite difficult to unravel. A very modest intro guides us into ‘Doomsday Argument’, but that gentle approach is only valid for 1 minute. The vocals growl, the folk ingredient accompanies the accelerating guitars and drums and the vocals of Thibaud Destouches are really threatening!
This band has the power of Amon Amarth, the Folk of Korpiklaani meets Wintersun and the mysticism of Wardruna, a band that will be familiar when you like the TV serie Vikings! One of the heaviest track on this album is ‘Erase By Fire’, and although there are constant bagpipes and flutes in the background, the song is capable to melt the North Pole! The pace and aggression continues in songs like ‘Rebirth’ and ‘Murdering The Darkness’. Luckily there is a lot of variety as well! A track like ‘’Despair Of The Last Man’ gives a moment of rest, a moment where you can catch your breath, albeit temporary. If you like bands like Suidakra, Eluveitie but with a more Death Metal approach, you definitely need to check Drakwald from France!
Drakwald seems to be a band that might have a golden future in hands, as they succeed in bringing their songs in a very convincing way and this is a band that will fit on many open air Festivals during summer season! I do hope that they have enough charisma to bring their songs on a stage where the people also demand visual entertainment! I’ll keep my eyes open, as the quality is present, so I believe that they have their destiny in own hands! Order at: http://www.drakwald.com/?lang=en
